Washington Spirit release kit, return to play
Updated: Aug 3
As the first American sports league to do so, the National Women’s Soccer League will return to play on Saturday, June 27th. In lieu of a traditional season, the NWSL has proposed the Challenge Cup, a competition in which eight of the nine teams compete in a modified tournament. In light of ten members of the Orlando Pride, players included testing positive, the team has withdrawn from the tournament. Games will be played at 12:30 pm and 10:00 pm Eastern time in Utah via CBS All Access.
A revitalized team, The Washington Spirit have spent the off season infusing talent into their already strong squad. In addition to exciting fans with interesting prospects and engaging virtually, the team has released new uniforms.
The new kit for the tournament features a new sponsor, CVS Health in the center. On the back and side of the jersey, Progressive, Sandy Springs Bank, and WAGS, Washington Area Girls Soccer are prominent. The home kit also features grey stripes against a solid navy background. A red stripe is also featured on the side of the jersey, a nod to the team's traditional colors, red, and blue.
According to washingtonspirit.com, “This kit represents the strides that the fans, the players and the city have made to create a rich history for women’s soccer. It was made to honor those that came before us, and those who will come after us. This is the next step for the beautiful game in the DMV”. Seeking a strong start to the Challenge Cup, the Spirit will face The Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, July 27th at 10:00 pm Eastern time on CBS All Access.
