The Capitals lose the series 4-1 against the New York Islanders. The Capitals were out played the whole entire series. They were also out-coached, Berry Trotz proved that the Caps should have kept him in 2018, after they won a Stanley Cup together. Todd Reirdon could not make the right adjustments. With two straight first round exists in the playoffs, Todd Reirdon’s future remains uncertain. Every Caps fan still wonders why Leonsis did not want to pay Trotz after he helped win the Capitals the 2018 Stanley Cup Champions.

Game 1- Islanders 4 Capitals 2

Game 2- Islanders 5 Capitals 2

Game 3- Islanders 2 Capitals 1(OT)

Game 4- Islanders 2 Capitals 3

Game 5- Islanders 4 Capitals 0

Takeaways:

The Washington Capitals scored 8 goals and only had 3 players score a goal in 5 games. Alex Ovechkin (4 goals) T. J. Oshie, (2 goals) and Evegeny Kuznetsov (2 goals). The offense just never clicked. Jakob Vrana had chances, but missed all of them, including a breakaway in Overtime of game 3. Nothing from anyone else including Tom Wilson and Lars Eller.

The Capitals defense could not put it together. Their defense was a problem all season long, and they gave up too many openings to the Islanders.

The Capitals seemed like they were outworked by the Islanders, the Islanders wanted it more than the Caps. They just seemed like they did not want it enough. Alex Ovechkin and T. J. Oshie were the only exception, they looked in shape, and always were giving it their all.

The Islanders played excellent defense and giving almost nothing up 5v5 in the series. The Capitals could not figure their defense out, Barry Trotz proved he is the better coach.

Braden Holtby might have played his last game as a Washington Capital, while he may not have been as good the last 2 years, he will forever be a Capitals legend. Thank you Braden Holtby.
