Report: Sacramento to join NWSL in the coming seasons
According to The Athletic, the National Women’s Soccer League will expand to Sacramento, California in the 2021 or 2022 season. The team would join Angel City FC, OL Reign, Portland Thorns FC, and Utah Royals FC in the western region of the country and could potentially create their own conference, rivaling NWSL clubs in the eastern region of the country such as our very own Washington Spirit.
As news circulated of this expansion in the past but moves were not made, sources now corroborate that the ownership group, Sacramento Republic FC will join the NWSL in the coming season. According to Meg Linehan of The Athletic, “Last fall, it seemed like the Sacramento group and the NWSL were on the verge of an agreement, potentially with a quick turnaround for the 2020 season. Racing Louisville FC had come to terms on a 2021 start date by October, but come December, the league was forced to announce that they’d be holding at nine teams”. News of a Sacramento team follows the official announcement of Angel City FC, an NWSL club in Los Angeles, California set to begin play in 2022. As Lindsay Rojas, President of Rebellion 99, official supporters group for Angel City FC told us, “The biggest place we want NWSL to be in is Sacramento, that would be a really easy trip for us”.
