Mystics regain confidence, defeat Dream
The Washington Mystics defeated the Atlanta Dream 98-91 earlier tonight, improving their record to 4-7. The Mystics had not won since July 30th until tonight. Having waived Essence Carson and Shey Peddy, two pre-season pick-ups, the Mystics signed Alecia Sutton, Stella Johnson, and Jacki Gemelos. Johnson was brought on after a medical hardship waiver was granted to the team, Gemelos was signed to a seven day contract, and Sutton was re-signed after having been waived in May due to Covid-19.
After having led the majority of the first period, the Mystics held control for the rest of the game. Looking much stronger offensively in part due to the new signings, the Mystics looked like a completely different team. Rookie Stella Johnson scored a whopping 25 points followed by Myisha Hines-Allen with 23 points respectively. For the Dream, Betnijah Laney led with 35 points followed by Courtney Willams with 30 points.
At the half, the Mystics led the Dream 45-39 and began producing three pointers at an astonishing rate, displaying the confidence and control that they lacked over the past few weeks. Picking up points left and right, the Mystics danced into the second half led by their new signings and established veterans. Though maintaining a small lead at the end, the Mystics looked strong and were able to find their footing after a series of disheartening losses.
The Mystics will return to play on Friday, August 21st at 8pm EST against the Dallas Wings.
